Introducing SPCSchool – SPC’s new training and development academy

2023 is off to an exciting start with the launch of SPCSchool, a new employee training & ongoing development academy. With the inaugural class currently going through the program, we asked training & development leader, Kiki Heron, a few questions to learn more about the vision behind SPCSchool.

Why and how did SPCSchool get started?

SPC is in a unique position to have hired several new team members within a short period of time. We’ve turned this challenge into an opportunity to document and share our knowledge and process piece by piece. SPCSchool is structured as a daily seminar to introduce topics, hands-on activities, and shadowing all departments and outside partners to learn from our experts in every part of the business.

What is the purpose of SPCSchool?

SPCSchool aims to teach it all—from the foundation of offset lithography printing and subtractive color theory to the mastery of combining offset web printing, data processing, and complex finishing into one process of inline printing. The academy provides new team members advanced understanding of every aspect of our print production and related services. Resulting not only in benefiting our clients but also providing opportunities for advancement within SPC.

What areas are you covering with the trainees?

SPCSchool curriculum is designed as a 6-month training program sliced into multiple sections:          Litho Sheetfed Printing, Finishing, Data and Postal, Litho Web Printing, and Digital Printing (both Sheetfed and Web). Other sections include Marketing Services and Advertising Technologies. This structure allows us to bring additional team members in for sections they desire additional education. Topics range from general industry knowledge and soft-business skills to specific SPC processes.

What is your SPC journey?

I joined SPC as an Associate Account Manager in June of 2016 upon graduating from Clemson University’s Graphic Communications program. After learning both the print and lettershop sides of production, I moved into the role of Account Manager. I have enjoyed being a part of SPC’s flexible and nimble environment, which has allowed me to have additional engagement through SPC’s Social Committee, Marketing/Social Media teams, and recruitment. I’m thrilled that SPC has implemented SPCSchool as our next innovation and am proud to support our team members in my newest role as Training & Development Leader.
