Ask Randy Recap: AI Incentive Explained

Last week, SPC hosted a virtual “Ask Randy” session to discuss the new AI Incentive, which is part of the USPS Integrated Technology Promotion. Marketers can receive a 3% discount during this promotion, which they can select for a consecutive six-month period at any time throughout the year. SPC recommends starting this customizable window after the Tactile Promotion concludes in July.

Two new options qualify for this discount:

Submission Requirements

AI Tools Available:

Using an AI tool such as Adobe Firefly, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, etc.

  • Must submit a digital file (pdf) containing screenshots of the prompt and the AI tool’s output.
    • Prompt must be visible next to the output in an unedited file.
  • Must include a short description of how the tool was used.
    • If the incorporated image does not entirely match the Al-generated output, explain what changes were made to the output and why.

During our session, many great questions were raised about this incentive. As promised, SPC has compiled a quick Q&A to provide those answers for you.

To qualify, would our piece need to have both an AI-generated image AND An AI-generated copy?

No, you only need to have one of the two featured on your mail piece.

Do you have to reveal on the mail piece that it was AI-generated?

No, you don’t have to disclose that your image or copy is AI-generated on your mail piece.

Does your AI-generated text need to be a call to action?

The AI-generated copy does not need to be used specifically for a call to action. You can use it for directional copy, descriptions, coupon offers, and supporting text.

It can just be one line?

The AI-generated copy needs to be a minimum of one complete sentence.

Does the image have to be 100% AI-generated or does AI retouching also apply?

The original image must be generated by AI. You may retouch the AI-generated image, but you must document the changes made and explain them when applying for the promotion.

If your mailer has multiple versions, the AI element must appear on each version, correct?  If so, it can be a mix of AI images and AI copy.

AI-generated imagery or messaging must be on every version. For example, version A can have an AI copy, and version B can have an AI image.

Can we use the same AI-generated image/copy for all 6 months or do we have to create a new image/copy for each mail drop?

As far as we know, there is no expiration. Sequential mailings do not need new copy or image.

If there are brand standards, legal requirements, etc. which necessitate a minor edit to the AI response to the original prompt, is there leeway to document that discrepancy and still collect the discount?

Edits are allowed to the AI-generated image and copy but you must document your changes and explain the reasoning in the submission.

SPC is available to assist in creating AI-generated images and messaging. Additionally, we can file on your behalf, or you may choose to do so independently. All submissions must be entered through the Mailing Promotions Portal. If you’re new to the process, get instructions at: postalpro.usps.com/promotions/portal. Here is a quick review:

  1. Log in to the Portal and select “Submit Mailpiece Pre-approval”.
    1. Register for the Integrated Technology Promotion via Incentive Programs on the Business Customer Gateway.
    1. If approved in step 1 and registered in step 2, prepare and submit postage statements electronically. Be sure to claim the correct CCR Code: IT.
      1. Reminder: Claim relevant Add-Ons at this time.
